Show #297: Chelcee Cheers

By Lynnae Marty Hentzen

As we wrap up our series on the home, we take a closer look at bath and body products. This is another area where small changes you make within your own life can not only make a difference for you but also for your community and the planet.

It is worth examining everything from the ingredient list to the packaging of all the products you use in your daily life at home. According to a 2019 article in Harpers Bazar titled “11 Sustainable beauty switches,” written by Bridget March, “Of the product packaging we can recycle, half of us don’t. . . Then there’s the problems of sustainability of ingredients, and planet-damaging chemicals. Thankfully, beauty companies big and small have been cleaning up their act, and as consumers make more conscious choices – increasingly armed with information on sustainability – a collective attitude shift has been made.”

#1 on their list is ‘Swap liquid soaps for bar soaps’!

Joining us this week is Chelcee Cheers (love her name!), owner and lead maker at Lathermore Soap Company, specializing in hand crafted 100% vegan and cruelty-free bath and body products.

With store locations in Historic Valley Junction in West Des Moines and Creston, Iowa, it’s worth your while to check out these wonderful, hand crafted products.

Remember that we can each contribute collectively by making small changes within our own homes and daily lives.

Tune in to the podcast to hear Chelcee tell her story about Lathermore Soap Company.

Key Takeaways from our discussion:

-       Lathermore Soap Company was initiated through research, trial and error, formulating, testing, re-formulating, and pure determination

-       All products are made in small batches

-       Bath and body products are purer if they are vegan

-       Starting a new business from scratch is a constant learning, growing, and humbling experience

-       For sustainability, 100% glass and biodegradable packing is used as well as having a buy-back program

-       To support and strengthen their community, environmental, and social impact, they only source from small family owned and women owned businesses

-       Although Chelcee enjoys the creativity of developing new products, using all natural ingredients can be very humbling as they don’t always turn out or behave as you might expect!

-       In the small business environment, don’t be afraid to make changes and be open to new possibilities

“You cannot get through a single day

Without having an impact on the world around you.

What you do makes a difference and

You have to decide what kind of a

                                    Difference you want to make.”

                        ~ Jane Goodall

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,

Nothing is going to get better.

                                    It’s not.”

                        ~ Dr. Seuss, the Lorax
