201: Sustainability at the DM Arts Festival with Katelin Brown

This week’s guest is Katelin Brown, one of three members of the Environmental Impact Team for the Des Moines Arts Festival. Originally from North Central Iowa, Katelin moved to Walla Walla, Washington for six years after graduating from Iowa State.

Fortunately, she decided to move back to central Iowa and she brought her husband with her. Both being sustainability advocates, they found their way to the Des Moines Arts Festival Event Management Team where they are sharing their time, energy and expertise.

The DM Arts Festival has won the prestigious Grand Pinnacle Award from the International Festivals and Event Association 28 times, including 3 years in a row as the top Gold winner. Even better, our DM Arts Festival has won the Best Green Program from this same Association.

The Event Management Team has created a comprehensive, long-range Sustainability Vision designed to identify and implement strategies and procedures that will dramatically reduce waste during the DM Arts Festival. The plan is designed to ensure minimal negative impact on the environment while still delivering a world-class event. (DMAF website)

As Katelin shared on the show, some of the aspects that have already been incorporated into the festival are: Waste recycling stations, generators running on biodiesel, paperless communication where possible, water re-fill stations for re-usable water bottles, free bike valet, and fencing around the VIP area made from fallen ash trees.

Plan to attend this year’s festival on June 22nd, 23rd, & 24th.

Something To Think About:

Art, freedom and creativity will change society faster than politics.
— Victor Pinchuk

And as Pablo Picasso once said...

“The world today doesn’t make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do.”

Thank you Katelin, for all your efforts in developing and supporting an ever expanding sustainability program within the Des Moines Arts Festival.

We are truly grateful.
